For less than five dollars, Glitterlites can completely transform tired, worn-out sandals hiding in the back of your closet into dazzling statement shoes that shine with personality. If you’ve ever dreamed of giving your leather Birkenstocks a bold, sparkly makeover, Glitterlites are the perfect DIY solution. In this guide, I’ll show you how to use Angelus Ruby Red Glitterlites to create your own “ruby slipper” moment—right on your favorite footbeds. In my earlier post, Birkenstock Diva: How I Transformed Pepto-Pink Rivet Sandals into Custom Works of Art, I shared how a disappointing pale-pink pair became the project that started my whole color-customization journey. Remember these? Tools & Supplies for Customizing BirkenstocksTools I used: • Angelus Glitterlites – Ruby Red • Angelus Acrylic Finisher (flexible top coat) • Tarrago Color Cream (for recoloring leather) • Barge All-Purpose Cement (sole bonding) • Fine brush/foam dauber, painter’s tape, soft cloths Birkenstock Pink Rivet Gizehs — Before the Ruby Red Transformation Before their dazzling makeover, these Pink Rivet Birkenstock Gizehs showcased their original soft pink leather, metallic rivets, and classic cork footbed. This “before” snapshot captures the calm before the Glitterlites storm—right before Angelus Ruby Red magic turned them into sparkling, one-of-a-kind sandals. They turned into this — my once-pink rivet Birkenstock Gizehs transformed into bold, custom-dyed purple sandals with new soles and a fresh, modern look. Using Tarrago leather color cream and a steady hand, I gave these Birkenstocks new life while keeping their signature comfort and sparkle intact. A perfect example of how DIY Birkenstock customization can revive old favorites and make them feel brand new again. Before, During, and After: Transforming Pink Rivet Birkenstock Gizehs into Bold Purple Showstoppers A complete DIY Birkenstock makeover in action — from removing the white soles to experimenting with rich purple leather dye. These once-pink rivet Gizehs were stripped, stained, and reborn into deep violet perfection, showcasing how creativity (and a little patience) can give tired sandals a whole new life. Proof that even well-loved Birkenstocks can become wearable art. Pink Rivet Birkenstock Gizehs Dyed Deep Purple — After the Transformation The final reveal — my once-pink rivet Birkenstock Gizehs reborn in rich, vibrant purple with perfectly matched rivets and a renewed cork footbed. This DIY dyeing project shows how a little Angelus and Tarrago color magic can turn classic Birkenstocks into bold, custom creations. A perfect mix of comfort, creativity, and color, ready for any California adventure. DIY Birkenstock Customization — From Pink Gizehs to a Bold New LookGuess what? I had another pair of pink Birkenstock Gizehs sitting in my collection, identical to the ones I had already customized. Since I love each of my Birkenstocks to be truly unique, I decided to take things up a notch with this pair—and do the entire transformation myself, right at home. Armed with patience, creativity, and a little courage, I completely resoled these Birkenstocks using the same steps I outlined in my Birkenstock Diva blog. This time, though, I was extra cautious about protecting the delicate toe post from melting. My backup plan was to send them to Michelangelo at Custom Made Birkenstocks for a full recraft if anything went wrong—but with a steady hand and a bit of luck, the toe posts stayed intact! Once the soles were removed, I used Tarrago Color Cream to hand-stain the leather uppers. Applying the color before attaching the new soles allowed for a perfectly even finish with no traces of pink left between the footbed and sole connection. After the dye dried, I added the finishing touch—coloring the white toe post black. Paint didn’t hold up, but my trusty Mr. Sharpie did the job beautifully, giving the sandals a clean, polished look that perfectly matched the sleek new black soles. This DIY Birkenstock makeover proved that with the right tools, a little creativity, and some patience, anyone can give their favorite sandals a fresh, custom look without ever leaving home. Mr. Sharpie Saves the Day — My Secret Weapon for Birkenstock DIYs Meet Mr. Sharpie, my unsung hero of Birkenstock customization! When leather paint failed to stick to the white toe post of my Gizehs, a simple black Sharpie delivered a flawless, long-lasting finish. This limited-edition metallic Sharpie set adds even more creative possibilities for future Birkenstock projects. Proof that sometimes the best DIY tools are already sitting in your desk drawer. The final step in this Birkenstock makeover was gluing the new black soles securely to the cork footbeds. I used Barge All-Purpose Cement Glue, a trusted choice among cobblers and DIY shoe enthusiasts, to create a strong and flexible bond that holds up to daily wear. This professional-grade adhesive keeps the soles firmly attached while preserving the comfort and durability that make authentic Birkenstocks so timeless. Barge All-Purpose Cement Glue — The Secret to a Strong Birkenstock Bond Barge All-Purpose Cement Glue is my go-to adhesive for DIY Birkenstock repairs and sole replacements. This toluene-free formula creates a powerful, flexible bond that works perfectly on cork, leather, and rubber. Whether you’re resoling old sandals or crafting a custom pair from scratch, this glue ensures a professional-quality finish that lasts through countless steps. Securing the Soles and Adding the Perfect Finishing TouchTo ensure a strong bond between the soles and the cork footbeds, I used clamps and rubber bands to apply even pressure during the drying process. After letting the Barge All-Purpose Cement Glue cure for a full 24 hours, I carefully removed all the tools and revealed a perfectly adhered pair of Birkenstocks. The transformation was already stunning—the new red color made the rivets pop beautifully against the leather. My once-tired Gizehs had been reborn into bold, vibrant sandals that demanded attention. But as any creative Birkenstock lover knows, sometimes “beautiful” isn’t enough. I wanted more dimension, more sparkle, more personality. Something was missing—and I was determined to find that magical finishing touch. Pink Birkenstock Gizehs Stained Red — Before the Glitterlites After resoling and staining, these once-pink Birkenstock Gizehs took on a deep red hue that made the metallic rivets stand out beautifully. The transformation was striking, but still missing that extra sparkle I craved. This “before” moment captures the calm right before the glitter magic—just moments away from their Angelus Ruby Red Glitterlites makeover. Adding the Sparkle — Discovering Angelus Glitterlites in Ruby RedThe red leather looked beautiful, but it was a little too dull and matte for my liking. My Birkenstock makeover needed that extra touch of magic—some shimmer, shine, and serious sparkle. I wanted my Gizehs to stand out, to catch the light with every step, and to reflect the creativity that makes customizing Birkenstocks so much fun. After searching for the perfect product to add that pop of personality, I found exactly what I needed: Angelus Glitterlites in Ruby Red. This tiny bottle of glitter-infused paint promised to deliver the sparkle, depth, and glam finish my sandals were missing—and it turned out to be pure magic for transforming ordinary leather into something extraordinary. Just one ounce of this rich, ruby-red formula can completely transform dull leather into a radiant, eye-catching finish that’s durable, flexible, and made to last. The ultimate DIY upgrade for custom Birkenstock lovers who crave a little glitter in their step. The Magic of Angelus Ruby Red GlitterlitesThis tiny one-ounce jar truly holds pure magic. Angelus Ruby Red Glitterlites can turn any dull, ordinary pair of shoes into something dazzling and full of personality. When I say Ruby Red, picture Dorothy’s legendary slippers from The Wizard of Oz—bold, brilliant, and full of sparkle. Once you brush on Ruby Red Glitterlites, you’ll realize we’re definitely not in Kansas anymore. The transformation is instant. These glitter-coated Birkenstocks radiate elegance and artistry, bringing a fairytale-level shimmer to everyday comfort. It’s like capturing a piece of Oz in a jar—one that turns plain leather into radiant, eye-catching footwear that’s completely unique to you. My Birkenstocks went from this: Red Rivet Birkenstock Gizehs — Before the Angelus Glitterlites Makeover These red rivet Birkenstock Gizehs were already stunning after being dyed and restored, but they were just one step away from their ultimate glow-up. This “before” moment shows the matte red finish right before I added Angelus Ruby Red Glitterlites for that shimmering, Oz-inspired transformation. Sometimes even the most beautiful Birkenstocks need a little extra sparkle to become truly magical. to this: Watch as my red rivet Birkenstock Gizehs come to life with Angelus Ruby Red Glitterlites. This short clip shows the glitter paint drying under natural sunlight, revealing a brilliant, sparkling finish that completely transforms the sandals. The flexible glitter coat adds shimmer and depth without compromising the comfort or quality of authentic Birkenstocks—proof that a little DIY creativity can turn an ordinary pair into wearable art. Customizing More Birkenstocks with Ruby Red GlitterlitesI fell so in love with the Ruby Red Glitterlites that I couldn’t stop at just one pair—I used the same little bottle of paint to transform two more pairs of Birkenstocks! The first makeover was a pair of Arizonas that had been beautifully recrafted by Michelangelo at Custom Made Birkenstocks. I scored them on Poshmark for just $20, and they were the perfect canvas for another creative experiment. At first, I planned to paint them black with matching black Glitterlites for a subtle sparkle. But once I started, I realized I wanted something bolder—a cosmic “Stardust” effect like the special-edition Birkenstock finish from a few years back. Only this time, I wanted to make it my own: deep black leather with fiery red Glitterlites dusted across the surface. A look Birkenstock hasn’t produced yet (hint, hint!). The result? A one-of-a-kind pair of Arizonas with a shimmering red-on-black galaxy effect that completely redefined classic comfort with a touch of glam. This is what I created: Customized Birkenstock Arizonas with Ruby Red Glitterlites — A DIY Stardust Finish These customized Birkenstock Arizonas combine deep black leather with a fiery red overlay of Angelus Ruby Red Glitterlites, creating a unique “Stardust” effect that shimmers in the light. Originally purchased on Poshmark and recrafted by Michelangelo at Custom Made Birkenstocks, this $20 thrifted find turned into a one-of-a-kind statement pair that blends bold style with Birkenstock comfort. I absolutely love these customized Arizonas and get compliments every single time I wear them. The finished look turned out to be an unexpected blend of Birkenstock’s classic Stardust finish and the vibrant Iride Red shade from the Fall/Winter 2018 collection—proof that a little creativity (and a touch of Glitterlites) can rival even Birkenstock’s own limited-edition designs.
The Ruby Red Temaras — My Sparkling “Pièce de Résistance”My ultimate Birkenstock transformation—the grand finale of my Glitterlites adventures—has to be my brown Temaras. I originally bought the Temaras in black and instantly fell in love with their crisscross straps and flattering fit. Naturally, I picked up the brown pair too, but they never quite felt like “me.” The color was too plain, too neutral, and definitely too dull for Gina Mama. So, what’s a Birkenstock-loving DIYer to do? Pull out the red leather paint and a bottle of Ruby Red Angelus Glitterlites, of course! Following the same process I outlined in my blog Bespoke Birkenstock, I primed the Temaras with a base layer of white paint to ensure vibrant color payoff. Then I added two coats of Angelus Chili Pepper Red paint for a rich, fiery tone. To finish, I brushed on three layers of Ruby Red Glitterlites, creating a radiant, multidimensional shimmer that looks stunning in any light. Before & After: Brown Birkenstock Temaras Transformed with Ruby Red Glitterlites From plain brown to sparkling red — my once-neutral Birkenstock Temaras got a full glitter makeover using Angelus Chili Pepper Leather Paint and Ruby Red Glitterlites. The transformation turned these dull sandals into bold, radiant showstoppers that perfectly capture the creative spirit behind every I Love Birkenstocks project. The result? My “Pièce de Résistance”—a dazzling pair of Ruby Red Sparkly Temaras that perfectly capture the mix of creativity, comfort, and individuality that defines every I Love Birkenstocks project. Watch these plain brown Birkenstock Temaras transform into stunning Ruby Red showstoppers using Angelus Chili Pepper Leather Paint and Ruby Red Glitterlites. This short video captures the shimmer, shine, and depth of the final finish—proving that a little DIY creativity can make your Birkenstocks as bold and unique as you are. Each layer of paint adds dimension and brilliance, creating a one-of-a-kind sparkle that looks incredible in natural light. Whether you’re into Birkenstock customization, shoe restoration, or creative fashion projects, this Glitterlites tutorial shows how easy it is to bring new life to old sandals while keeping that iconic Birkenstock comfort. There’s No Place Like Home — And Nothing Like Custom BirkenstocksEvery time I slip into my Ruby Red Temaras—or any of my customized Birkenstocks painted with Angelus Glitterlites—I feel like I’m walking through a bit of magic. There’s a sparkle in each step, a reminder of creativity and transformation, much like Dorothy’s journey through the Land of Oz in her iconic ruby slippers. Owning a pair of truly unique Birkenstocks—sandals that no one else has and that can’t be found in any store—feels empowering. They’re more than just shoes; they’re wearable art, handcrafted expressions of individuality and imagination. Still, beneath all that shimmer and shine, I’m just Gina Mama—a hardworking woman, mom, and wife with a creative spark and a love for comfort. Whenever my artistic side drifts too high into the clouds, I only need to click my (Birkenstock) heels three times and remind myself: there’s no place like home. Because truly, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of walking through life in a pair of custom, one-of-a-kind Birkenstocks that reflect exactly who you are. 2025 Update — Where My Custom Glitter Birkenstocks Are NowIt’s been a few years since my first Angelus Ruby Red Glitterlites Birkenstock makeover, and I’m happy to report that my custom red Gizehs are still part of my personal collection — they sparkle just as beautifully as the day I painted them. These DIY glitter Birkenstocks have truly proven their durability and shine, even after years of wear. I did part with a few pairs along the way. My red Glitterlites Temaras were sold to a Birkenstock friend from my private Facebook group who happens to wear the same size. The purple rivet Gizehs went to the secondary market — because honestly, how many pairs of the same style does one person need? Somewhere in the back of my closet, my customized Birkenstock Arizonas with Ruby Red Glitterlites — my original DIY “Stardust” finish — are still tucked away. Since Arizonas are my all-time favorite Birkenstock style, it’s always tough to let go of a regular-width pair in an incredible color like this. I have a feeling I’ll be digging them out soon to see how that shimmering ruby-red sparkle has held up after all these years. Updated with new photos and a 2025 YouTube Short, it’s the ultimate companion post for anyone ready to refresh or reinvent their favorite pair. FAQ: How to Paint or Color Your BirkenstocksFrom creating shimmering Ruby Red masterpieces to restoring faded neutrals, this guide answers every DIY question—from how to prep your straps to how to seal your paint so it doesn’t crack. If you’ve ever wondered “Can I paint my Birkenstocks?”—the answer is a big, creative yes. How do I paint leather Birkenstocks at home? Painting leather Birkenstocks is easier than you might think! Start by cleaning the straps with a mild leather cleaner to remove dirt and oils. Then apply a thin, even layer of Angelus Leather Paint or Tarrago Color Cream using a small brush or sponge. Let each coat dry completely before adding another. Finish with a clear leather sealer to protect the color and maintain flexibility. Can you paint suede or nubuck Birkenstocks? I would not paint suede, but you can dye it. Always use a dye made specifically for suede, like Fiebing’s or Tarrago Suede Dye. Avoid regular acrylic paints—they can stiffen or ruin the texture. Gently brush the nap after dyeing to restore that signature soft feel. What kind of paint works best on Birkenstocks? For leather Birkenstocks, Angelus Leather Paint and Angelus Glitterlites are my go-to choices. Tarrago Color Cream also works beautifully for subtle recoloring, nourishing, or restoring faded straps. If you’re painting EVA or synthetic Birkenstocks, try Angelus 2-Hard additive mixed with acrylics for long-lasting adhesion. How do I seal painted Birkenstocks so the color lasts? Use a flexible sealer or finisher designed for leather—Angelus Acrylic Finisher is a great choice. Apply it in light, even layers after the paint has fully dried. This prevents cracking, peeling, and fading while keeping the surface smooth and water-resistant. Can I change the color of my Birkenstocks without damaging them? Absolutely! Whether you want to turn faded taupe Arizonas into shiny red showstoppers or update old suede Gizehs, proper prep and the right products make all the difference. Always clean, condition, and test a small hidden area first to ensure even color absorption. How do I get paint off of Birkenstocks if I make a mistake? If you accidentally spill or smudge paint, gently wipe it away immediately using a soft cloth and a small amount of rubbing alcohol or acetone. Be careful—too much can strip the finish or dry out the leather. For cork soles, use fine-grit sandpaper to remove dried paint without damaging the surface. Can I use Glitterlites on Birkenstocks? Yes! Angelus Glitterlites are perfect for adding shimmer and sparkle to your Birkenstocks. They’re flexible, durable, and designed specifically for leather. Ruby Red Glitterlites, my personal favorite, give that “Dorothy’s ruby slippers” magic while keeping your Birks comfortable and wearable. How long does it take for painted Birkenstocks to dry? Drying time depends on humidity and paint thickness, but most paints and dyes should dry in about 30–60 minutes between coats. For best results, let your Birkenstocks cure for at least 24 hours before wearing them again. How can I make my old Birkenstocks look new again? Beyond painting, you can refresh your Birkenstocks by cleaning the footbeds, renewing the cork with Birkenstock Cork Sealer, and polishing the buckles. Add a pop of color or sparkle with paint, and you’ll have a completely new pair—without the new-pair price tag!
