Proper Birkenstock care starts with understanding what actually causes damage. Extreme heat, rapid drying, and long exposure to moisture are the biggest reasons Birkenstock cork dries out, footbeds warp, and straps weaken. Suede Birkenstocks stay softer, cleaner, and easier to maintain when you protect them before you wear them. Most people jump straight into brushing and spot-cleaning, but the real secret to long-lasting, velvety suede is a regular routine of water- and stain-repellent spray. This simple step prevents the deep stains, water marks, dust absorption, and denim transfer that make suede look tired long before its time — and it makes future cleaning dramatically easier.

Birkenstock does sell their own Water & Stain Repellent (a non-aerosol spray) in the Deluxe Shoe Care Kit, and it works well for both suede and leather. But personally, I prefer Kiwi Suede Protector because it gives stronger, longer-lasting protection and is easy to reapply.

Important: Always spray suede protector in a well-ventilated area — I choose to do this outside.
