Why Recrafting Birkenstocks Matters (And Why I’ll Never Throw a Pair Away Again)

Birkenstocks take us places; to work, on a spontaneous hike, on weekend excursions, to the beach, on a long trip.  Birkenstocks are with us when we are creating memories with family and friends.  People who wear Birkenstocks generally become attached to their shoes.  So, when our Birkenstocks start to show signs of wear, the thought of replacing them can become anxiety provoking.  That’s why Birkenstock recrafting and repair has become such an important part of how I care for my shoes — and my feet.

The Pair I Regret Letting Go — Before I Knew Birkenstocks Could Be Recrafted

Birkenstocks are highly durable and one pair can last several years.  Imagine all the memories created over a decade of wearing one pair of Birkenstocks.  In my blog, My First Birkenstock Arizonas: Comfort, Fit Tips, and the Love Story That Started I Love Birkenstocks, I tell my story about my first pair.  I had worn my Birkenstocks over the course of a decade, from high school through college and beyond.  The memories while wearing these Birks were priceless.  I assumed the shoes were beyond repair — not realizing Birkenstocks are fully repairable.  I did not have the heart to dispose of my Birkenstocks and left that task to my mother.

Before Google — I Didn’t Know Birkenstocks Could Be Repaired

The internet was in its infancy when my Birkenstocks fell apart.  I did not have the luxury of doing a simple Google search about Birkenstock repair or recrafting to learn that Birkenstocks are fully repairable.  If I knew then what I know now, I would have NEVER disposed of my favorite shoes.

Birkenstock Recrafting Before & After — Real Results in under 30 seconds

Seeing this transformation still gets me every time.

Before I knew Birkenstocks could be repaired, I let a favorite pair go — not realizing what was possible.  This short video shows the real before-and-after recrafting results on my discontinued Birkenstock Granadas, from worn cork and deep footbed impressions to a fully restored original footbed, refreshed cork, and new soles.

If you’ve ever wondered whether Birkenstock recrafting is actually worth it, this quick video shows what a professional restoration can truly achieve.
For a full breakdown of the recrafting process, costs, and long-term results, keep reading below.

A Second Chance Pair — My Burgundy Birkenstock Granadas

I had a friend give me a pair of Birkenstocks that she was no longer wearing.  We happened to wear the same size and width.  They were a pair of Granadas in Burgundy leather.  I was thrilled at receiving her gift because Birkenstock is currently not making the Granada in Burgundy leather.  The Granada is one of those classic Birkenstock styles that proves why recrafting discontinued models is worth it.

If you’re curious where the Granada fits within Birkenstock’s broader lineup — including discontinued and current styles — I’ve put together a complete guide here:
👉 Birkenstock Styles Guide: Classic, Discontinued & Modern Birkenstock Models Explained.

Why I Couldn’t Wear Pre-Owned Birkenstocks Without Recrafting

For those of you that know me, you know that I am a germophobe.  There was no way I could wear the gifted Birkenstocks without cleaning them first.  I referred to my blog, How to Care for your Birkenstocks and followed the steps for cleaning the footbed.  I cleaned the shoes twice, but the imprint of my friend’s foot was still on the footbed.  This gave me the heebee geebees and I knew I would not wear the shoes until the impression was removed.  This is one of the most common reasons people choose Birkenstock recrafting instead of reselling or replacing pre-owned sandals.

Researching Birkenstock Recrafting & Authorized Repair Options

I turned to the internet to research my options.  I found a great article, by Alex Ronan, about, “The Birkenstock Doctor” in the NY Times.  I learned that Tom Lonergan, from iBirks, is an authorized Birkenstock repair person.  This research helped me understand the difference between general cobblers and authorized Birkenstock repair specialists.

Why I Chose an Authorized Birkenstock Repair Specialist

I confirmed his status as an authorized repair person from Birkenstock USA’s webpage.  I also located a few cobblers locally from this same search engine.  When I called the local cobblers to get a price quote, I felt that their customer service lacked, many were out of authentic Birkenstock footbeds, and the prices they quoted for recrafting were above the price listed at iBirks.
What mattered most to me:
  • Access to authentic Birkenstock footbeds
  • Transparent recrafting pricing
  • Experience with Birkenstock cork-latex construction
  • Proven reviews from other Birkenstock owners

My Experience Working With an Authorized Birkenstock Recrafting Service

I contacted Tom via email and he responded within the hour.  Tom confirmed that he had authentic Birkenstock footbeds and provided me with simple instructions on the process of sending in my shoes.  Tom said that the shoes would be repaired within 2 days of receiving them.  The price was in the ballpark of other mail order repair cobblers and his yelp reviews were stellar.

This experience taught me what questions to ask before sending any pair of Birkenstocks in for recrafting—a process I now cover in detail in my complete Birkenstock Recraft & Repair guide.

Birkenstock Granada Recrafting Before & After (Video Results)

Sometimes photos don’t tell the whole story.

Below is a real before-and-after YouTube video showing my burgundy Birkenstock Granadas before recrafting and after professional restoration — including the new original footbed, refreshed cork, restored soles, and conditioned leather uppers.

If you’re wondering whether Birkenstock recrafting is actually worth it — especially for discontinued styles — this video shows exactly what a full restoration can achieve.

What Was Included in My Birkenstock Recrafting Service

At the time I sent in my shoes, Tom was offering 20% of recrafting services.  This included a new footbed, new soles, a pair of dura-heel inserts, free professional cork renew and leather conditioning of the uppers.  Although the soles of my pre-loved Birkenstocks were not over worn, I decided to have them replaced because of the special that was being offered.  I tend to wear down my Birkenstocks most quickly on the heels.  Therefore, I wanted to test out the dura-heel because it is supposed to “add months of wear” to that area.

Cork care is a critical part of extending the life of Birkenstocks, and once cork damage progresses too far, repairs become more limited. I explain this in detail here:
👉 Cracked Cork in Birkenstocks — Why It Happens, How to Fix It, & How to Prevent It for Years of Comfort

This full Birkenstock recrafting included a new footbed, sole replacement, heel protection, cork renewal, and professional leather conditioning.

If you want a deeper look at the materials that make Birkenstocks repairable — including cork-latex footbeds, leather uppers, EVA soles, and why material quality matters for recrafting — I break it all down here:
👉 Birkenstock Materials Guide: Cork, Leather, Footbeds, Soles & What Lasts Longest.

Why I Chose a New Footbed and Sole (Health & Comfort Reasons)

In addition to my issues associated with germs, I took into consideration the health and support implications of wearing a used Birkenstock footbed.  The footbed had already conformed to my friend’s feet and would not meet the needs of my feet.  Once the dye is cast on a footbed it is permanent.  It was important for me to have a new footbed and a new sole so that I could continue to remain asymptomatic in regards to back and foot discomfort.

Regular vs Soft Footbed — What I Chose and Why

With iBirks recrafting service, I had the choice of a regular or a soft footbed replacement.  Although the original Granadas came with a soft footbed, I opted for the regular footbed.  I prefer the harder footbed because they completely mold to my feet, provide more arch support, have a deeper heel cup, and offer more space on the footbed without the foam liner of a soft footbed.

If you’re trying to decide between the two, I break down the long-term comfort differences in detail here: Birkenstock Soft vs Original Footbed: My Honest Comparison After Years of Wear (2025 Update).

Choosing between a regular and soft footbed is one of the most important decisions when recrafting Birkenstocks.

Customizing My Birkenstocks & Turnaround Time

Being able to customize the footbed to my preference was a real highlight for me.  The only thing better would be able to make customized Birkenstocks.  You know how Converse and Adidas offer customers the ability to create customized shoes?  Imagine the possibilities if Birkenstock provided this feature to customers!

As it turns out, that experience does exist — and I eventually went all the way. I share the full story of designing and wearing my own handmade pair here: My First Pair of Custom Birkenstocks | Handmade Sandal Experience.

I had my recrafted Granadas waiting on my doorstep 8 days after I sent them to iBirks.  The shoes traveled from California to Ohio (over a holiday weekend) and back in less than the time that it would have taken for me to get the shoes recrafted locally.  I was delighted with the expediency of the process as well as the outcome of the workmanship.

This experience eventually led me to explore fully custom Birkenstocks — which I now cover in my Michelangelo recrafting hub.

Recrafted Birkenstock Granadas: Final Results & Workmanship Review

Tom did an amazing job recrafting my pre-loved, pre-worn Birkenstock Granadas.  I received a brand-new Birkenstock original footbed with the updated black imprint (not the older yellow logo), along with a fresh application of cork renew.  The new soles were perfectly attached to the footbed, and the original leather uppers were professionally cleaned and conditioned.  If you’ve ever wondered why Birkenstock footbed logos changed over time, I explain the difference between the original black imprint and the older yellow logo here: Birkenstock Footbed Logo Color Change (Original Footbed: Black vs Yellow Ink).

After recrafting, these Birkenstocks looked — and felt — like a brand-new pair of shoes.  This before-and-after transformation is exactly why professional Birkenstock recrafting is worth it — especially for discontinued styles like the Granada.

Was Birkenstock Recrafting Worth It? My Final Verdict

I am completely satisfied with the Birkenstock recrafting experience. I was able to reuse, renew, and recycle an old pair of Birkenstocks. The cost of Birkenstock recrafting was a fraction of what it would have been to purchase a new pair of shoes. I was able to choose the type of footbed that I wanted and added the Dura-Heel, which will extend the life of the soles.

I essentially have a brand-new pair of Birkenstock Granada sandals with an upper that has been discontinued by Birkenstock. In French, this would be considered “nouveau” — meaning the Granadas are new to me, even though they are old.
Why Birkenstock Recrafting Made Sense for Me

  • Lower cost than buying a new pair
  • Authentic Birkenstock footbed replacement
  • Extended sole life with Dura-Heel protection
  • Ability to save a discontinued Birkenstock style
  • Sustainable alternative to replacing worn sand

Would I Recraft Birkenstocks Again? Long-Term Wear, Resoling & Repair Advice

While I don’t currently have another pair of Birkenstocks that needs a full recraft, I’m already keeping an eye on which of my older pairs may eventually need to be resoled.  Timing matters — resoling Birkenstocks before the cork becomes exposed is key to preserving the footbed and extending the life of the shoe.

For now, I still have plenty of wear left in my soles, but when the time comes, I wouldn’t hesitate to invest in professional Birkenstock repair again.  Being able to resole, renew, and reuse my Birkenstocks means I never have to choose between comfort, sustainability, and replacing a favorite discontinued style.

I truly love my Birkenstocks, and recrafting ensures I never have to throw away a well-loved pair simply because the soles wore down.  Repairing them properly keeps them in rotation — exactly where they belong.

Frequently Asked Questions About Birkenstock Recrafting

Can Birkenstocks really be recrafted instead of replaced?
Yes.  Authentic Birkenstocks are designed to be fully repairable.  With professional recrafting, the footbed, soles, and cork can be replaced or restored while keeping the original uppers intact.

Is Birkenstock recrafting worth it for discontinued styles?
Absolutely.  Recrafting is often the only way to preserve discontinued Birkenstock models like the Granada while maintaining original fit, comfort, and support.

What is included in a full Birkenstock recraft?
A full recraft may include a new original Birkenstock footbed, sole replacement, cork renewal, leather conditioning, and optional heel protection like Dura-Heel inserts.

Should you replace the footbed when recrafting Birkenstocks?
In many cases, yes.  Footbeds permanently mold to the original wearer’s feet.  Replacing the footbed ensures proper support, hygiene, and comfort — especially for pre-owned Birkenstocks.

What’s the difference between regular and soft footbeds when recrafting?
A regular footbed offers firmer support, deeper heel cups, and more room, while a soft footbed includes an added foam layer.  Choosing between them is one of the most important recrafting decisions.

If you want a deeper breakdown based on long-term wear, arch support, and comfort differences, I share my full experience here:
👉 Birkenstock Soft vs Original Footbed: My Honest Comparison After Years of Wear (2025 Update)

How long does Birkenstock recrafting take?
Turnaround times vary, but professional mail-in recrafting can often be completed within 1–2 weeks, depending on services selected and shipping time.

Is it better to use an authorized Birkenstock repair specialist?
Yes. Authorized specialists use authentic materials and understand Birkenstock’s cork-latex construction, which helps preserve fit, durability, and long-term comfort.

Can recrafting extend the life of Birkenstocks?
Definitely.  When done before cork damage occurs, recrafting can add years of wear — making it a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to replacement.

Hi, I’m Gina Mama—the unapologetic Birkenstock addict behind I Love Birkenstocks. 👣 My teenage crush in the 90s wasn’t on a boy band—it was on a pair of Birks. I wore them for a decade straight (sorry, other shoes). After rekindling the flame in 2015, I’ve been diving deep into everything Birkenstock: the history, the styles, the care tips, and yes…the occasional rant about narrow soles. For me, Birks aren’t just sandals—they’re a lifestyle. Comfort, authenticity, self-expression… and maybe a little cork dust in my veins.
