The Original Footbed feels firm right out of the box, and it took me about two weeks of regular wear before they truly felt “broken in” and molded to my feet. One thing I quickly learned is that I wear the same size in both the Original and Soft Footbed styles. The sizing stays consistent — what changes is the firmness, support, and break-in timeline. Over the years, I’ve realized that my feet often gravitate toward the Original Footbed when I know I’ll be doing a lot of walking. It offers stronger arch support and creates a more custom fit the longer you wear it. But that doesn’t mean it’s everyone’s favorite — comfort truly depends on your foot shape, arch height, and how much cushioning you prefer underfoot. What Is the Birkenstock Soft Footbed?The Soft Footbed is much easier to wear right out of the box. The added foam layer softens the feel immediately, and the toe bar is noticeably less pronounced. The break-in time is significantly shorter than the Original Footbed — often just a few hours of wear instead of several days or weeks. However, because of that added foam, the Soft Footbed doesn’t conform to my foot as deeply as the Original Footbed does. For me, the Original provides more pronounced support, especially under the arch. But when I want instant comfort, slipper-like ease, or a pair I can slip into after a long day, the Soft Footbed wins every time.
