Longtime Birkenstock loyalists remember when things started to change. After the Birkenstock family sold a controlling stake in the company back in 2021, many of us noticed a dip in quality. I’ve written several blog posts about it, and I wasn’t alone in my concern. There was real worry that the soul of the company might be lost.

Did Birkenstock Quality Change After 2021?

One of the biggest issues? Most of the seasonal and limited-edition releases were only available in narrow width.  For those of us who have been wearing Birks for decades, this was frustrating. The regular width footbed that is known for its roomy, supportive shape is part of what made the brand iconic. It’s what brought many of us to Birkenstock in the first place. So when those options disappeared or were never created in the first place, many of us stopped buying. Instead, we held on tight to our vintage pairs and cheated on Birkenstock by buying different brands.

Lately, though, I’ve noticed a gradual shift and it’s a welcome one!

Birkenstock Regular vs Narrow Width: Why It Matters

Some of the newer, more fashion-forward seasonal styles are being offered in both narrow and regular widths. While not all of these styles are available in the U.S. yet, savvy shoppers know where to look. No, I’m not sharing my sources here because Birkenstock keeps a close eye on distribution.  I don’t want my “dealers” cut off from shipping to the States.

When Birkenstock does it right....magic happens!  When the brand finds that sweet spot where quality meets fashion and function, the old-school fans notice and we appreciate it.

Let me take a moment and gush over these two new Birkenstock releases because OH. MY. GOODNESS.  They are everything!!  I’m talking regular width, original footbed (#winning), buttery soft leather and suede, and those little extra touches that make my Birkenstock-loving heart skip a beat.  The braided strap on the Boston?  Perfection.  The rivets on the Arizonas?  Chef’s kiss.  These pairs are seriously some of the best Birkenstocks I’ve bought in YEARS and y’all know that’s saying something when it comes from Gina Mama.

Final Verdict: Are Birkenstocks Still Worth It in 2025?

Thank you for finally bringing us trendy designs in regular width, without compromising on the comfort and durability we’ve relied on for years. Please keep the sustainable, stylish, and well-made styles coming.  If you do, I will gladly throw my money at your product and stop cheating on you with other brands.

It feels great to once again be able to add new pairs to my collection.  Ones that I know I will be in my footwear rotation for years to come.
