Birkenstock Limited Editions, Narrow-Only — A Plea for Regular-Width Arizonas

1/29/2018

chubby shaming

Dear Birkenstock,

You have hurt my feelings.

As a long-time, devoted Birkenstock wearer, I feel like I am being left out in the cold with your limited edition releases.  Why?  Simple.  Your gorgeous limited edition sandals are only available in narrow width.  This feels unfair and hurtful.  All of us who require regular width Birkenstocks are left drooling with envy.

The limited edition Birkenstocks that you have unveiled for the Birkenstock Box openings have been amazing.  I would have purchased one of each design, if these special Arizonas came in regular width.  When I saw the sneak peak of your “Sweetheart Collection,” I immediately reached out to Birkenstock Attitudes to inquire if these Arizonas would be available in regular width.
I Love Birkenstocks, Birkenstock, Cracked Cork, Cork Renew, Black Ink Footbed, Yellow Ink Footbed, Metallic Birkenstocks, Birkenstock Boots, Birkenstock Shoes, Birkenstock Box, Birkenstock Authentic, Fake Birkenstocks, Shearling Birkenstock, Knock Off Birkenstocks, Counterfeit Birkenstocks, soft footbed, I Love Birkenstocks, Birkenstock USA, breaking in Birkenstocks, Birkenstock uppers, Birkenstock Arizona, Birkenstock Boston, How to Break in Birkenstocks, Gizeh toe post, Men and Birkenstocks, Birkenstock Blisters, Poshmark Birkenstocks, Birkenstocks, Shiny Metallic Leather, Bespoke, Sweetheart Collection, Limited Edition Birkenstock

I was informed, sadly, that this would be a narrow width limited edition release only (again).

Enough is enough.

I would like to direct this letter to the individual(s) who decided that only women with narrow feet should be given the opportunity to buy your limited edition shoes.  Crunch the numbers, Birkenstock, there are hundreds of thousands of people worldwide that buy your regular width sandals.  It is people like me, who are loyal, life-long customers that would love to get their hands on these rare Birks.  Speciality lux Birkenstocks would fly off shelves in regular width.
I Love Birkenstocks, Birkenstock, Cracked Cork, Cork Renew, Black Ink Footbed, Yellow Ink Footbed, Metallic Birkenstocks, Birkenstock Boots, Birkenstock Shoes, Birkenstock Box, Birkenstock Authentic, Fake Birkenstocks, Shearling Birkenstock, Knock Off Birkenstocks, Counterfeit Birkenstocks, soft footbed, I Love Birkenstocks, Birkenstock USA, breaking in Birkenstocks, Birkenstock uppers, Birkenstock Arizona, Birkenstock Boston, How to Break in Birkenstocks, Gizeh toe post, Men and Birkenstocks, Birkenstock Blisters, Poshmark Birkenstocks, Birkenstocks, Shiny Metallic Leather, Bespoke, Sweetheart Collection, Limited Edition Birkenstock
All these lovely Birkenstocks are for narrow feet only. Picture from Birkenstock.com
I understand that you are appealing to the fashion world by slimming down the Arizona and only offering it in narrow.  But your trendy fashionistas will only wear the shoe for one season and then move on to the next big trend.  I would wear a limited edition lux Birkenstock for decades, with pride!!  I am already your “Birkenstory” ambassador in the trenches, talking to everyday people on the street about my gorgeous Birkenstocks.  People stop and ask me all the time where I bought my spotted metallic Birks.  Imagine how many people would ask me about an eye catching limited edition Arizona.
I Love Birkenstocks, Birkenstock, Cracked Cork, Cork Renew, Black Ink Footbed, Yellow Ink Footbed, Metallic Birkenstocks, Birkenstock Boots, Birkenstock Shoes, Birkenstock Box, Birkenstock Authentic, Fake Birkenstocks, Shearling Birkenstock, Knock Off Birkenstocks, Counterfeit Birkenstocks, soft footbed, I Love Birkenstocks, Birkenstock USA, breaking in Birkenstocks, Birkenstock uppers, Birkenstock Arizona, Birkenstock Boston, How to Break in Birkenstocks, Gizeh toe post, Men and Birkenstocks, Birkenstock Blisters, Poshmark Birkenstocks, Birkenstocks, Shiny Metallic Leather, Bespoke, Sweetheart Collection, Limited Edition Birkenstock
This Arizona I would wear with pride for decades, but it won't fit! Picture from Birkenstock.com
Birkenstock, you are not just a trend.  You are the foundation of peerless comfort.  The entire reason that I, and countless other faithful Birkenstock wearers, choose your brand, is because your regular width sandals actually fit.  Even though I have wide feet, I respect fashion and desire fashionable shoes.  And you continue to ostracize people like me by releasing your limited edition sandals in narrow width only.

You are missing out on sales, and possibly losing customers, by excluding women with normal to wide width feet.  If you offered these fashionable limited edition Birkenstocks in regular width too, you would continue to grow your devoted customer list, rather than pushing some of us away.  I have already cheated on you with Fryes and Dr. Martens.  Who’s to say what other brand might enter my closet in the near future?

These won't be in my closet anytime soon. NARROW only. Photo from Birkenstock.
Don’t try to tell me that narrow width Birkenstocks accommodate both narrow and medium widths.  That is a bunch of baloney.  There may only be a few millimeters between a narrow width and regular width footbed.  Yet, every damn millimeter is needed for someone with a wide foot!

Any regular width Birkenstock connoisseur, like myself, knows that a narrow width Birkenstock is simply not up to snuff.  The arch support is in the wrong place, the toe bar is off, and foot “spillage" occurs over the sides of the shoe.  Wearing the wrong width Birkenstock, is like wearing the wrong size bra.  Things turn ugly quickly when they do not fit correctly.  There is nothing comfy or sexy about having a shoe make your wide foot look chubby due to “spillage”.

These beautiful Birks would cause spillage in narrow. Photo from Birkenstock.
It is like you are chubby shaming those of us with wider feet.  You are indirectly, passive aggressively telling us that our feet are too chubby to be fashionable.  I do not want to be chubby shamed!!

If Birkenstock is known for making two widths, then make two widths available in every shoe that you offer.  Especially your luxurious small batch Birks.  Leave it up to the consumer to decide if s/he prefers narrow or regular width.

I will not subscribe to “vanity” sizing when it comes to the width of my foot.  I embrace the fact that I have a wide foot and I will no longer squeeze my foot into a shoe that is too narrow.  I have done that far too long in my life and I refuse to do it any longer.  And I am certainly not going to drop $185, plus tax, for a narrow width Birkenstock.  If I am going to pay that kind of money for something unique, then it damn well better fit perfectly!!
I Love Birkenstocks, Birkenstock, Cracked Cork, Cork Renew, Black Ink Footbed, Yellow Ink Footbed, Metallic Birkenstocks, Birkenstock Boots, Birkenstock Shoes, Birkenstock Box, Birkenstock Authentic, Fake Birkenstocks, Shearling Birkenstock, Knock Off Birkenstocks, Counterfeit Birkenstocks, soft footbed, I Love Birkenstocks, Birkenstock USA, breaking in Birkenstocks, Birkenstock uppers, Birkenstock Arizona, Birkenstock Boston, How to Break in Birkenstocks, Gizeh toe post, Men and Birkenstocks, Birkenstock Blisters, Poshmark Birkenstocks, Birkenstocks, Shiny Metallic Leather, Bespoke, Sweetheart Collection, Limited Edition Birkenstock
I could squeeze my feet into these beauties, but then I would be chubby shaming my own feet. Not cool in Narrow in only. Picture from Birkenstock.
Please do not consider remedying your lack of regular width limited edition Arizonas by simply offering them in a different style, like a Gizeh or a Mayari.  I don’t want another pair of Gizehs or Mayaris in regular width.  While I adore the Gizeh and Mayaris that I do own, sometimes I feel like I have to settle for those models because they are always available in regular width.

I love the Birkenstock Arizona.  It is hands down my favorite Birkenstock model ever.  I wish to build my Arizona collection.  I want access to the limited edition lux Birkenstock Arizonas in regular width.  To me, Arizonas define the Birkenstock brand.  The Arizona is iconic.

Lately, I feel like I have been in a perpetual state of disappointment when it comes to your limited edition releases.  I realize that you are testing the waters with these small batch Birkenstock offerings.  Trying to start a Birkenstock craze, like the Nike limited edition craze.

I would like to participate in this craze.  I want to snatch up these small batch shoes and beef up my Arizona collection.   I beg you to offer more than just your core collection in regular width.  Brown, black, gray, and taupe get boring after awhile.

PLEASE,  make your small batch Birkenstocks in *REGULAR* width!!   Or just make one pair in size 38 Regular and send them to me.

Thank you for your consideration,
Gina Mama

What If Dr. Martens Aren’t Right for You? Comparing Popular Boot Alternatives

If you’ve ever tried to break in a pair of Dr. Martens (Doc Martens) boots, you already know the struggle—blisters, stiff leather, and aching heels are practically a rite of passage.  But what if there were a smarter, more comfortable way to break them in—one inspired by Birkenstock’s slow-and-steady comfort philosophy?

In this updated guide, originally published in January 2018 and refreshed in November 2025, I’ll walk you through exactly how I softened and shaped my Dr. Martens combat boots using the same gentle techniques I perfected with my Birkenstocks.

If you’re also breaking in Birkenstock boots this season, my full guide on How to Break In Birkenstock Boots walks through sizing tweaks, blister-prevention strategies, insole differences, and how to soften stiff leather without pain.

Still deciding whether Dr. Martens are right for you—or comparing them against other popular boots?  I put together a real-life comparison of Solovair, Blundstone, Dr. Martens, and Birkenstock boots, breaking down comfort, arch support, break-in time, sizing quirks, and which boots actually work best for wide feet and everyday wear: Solovair vs Blundstone vs Dr. Martens vs Birkenstock Boots: The Ultimate Comfort, Support & Real-Life Comparison Guide.

And if you’re specifically considering pull-on boots as an alternative to Docs or Birkenstock boots, my Blundstone Boots: The Ultimate Sizing, Fit & Waterproof Buyer’s Guide breaks down which Blundstones perform best in rain, mud, and all-season wear—especially for wide feet.

From Birkenstocks to Dr. Martens: My First Real Boot Crossover

After spending over a year exclusively wearing Birkenstocks, slipping into my first pair of Dr. Martens felt like stepping through a fashion portal into a whole new world.  Birkenstocks have always made me feel comfortable, happy, and effortlessly stylish—feminine, flirty, sporty, and even a little luxurious.  But Dr. Martens bring out an entirely different side of me: strong, bold, and unapologetically confident.  These iconic combat boots balance durability with attitude, proving that comfort and edge can coexist just as beautifully as cork and leather in a classic pair of Birkenstocks.
Breaking In My Dr. Martens: Confidence in Every Step

My first pair of Dr. Martens made me feel like a total badass—strong, confident, and ready to take on anything. These 1460 Pascals in Cherry Red Temperley leather boots prove that comfort and attitude can go hand in hand.

Why Breaking In Dr. Martens Is Harder Than Birkenstocks (And What That Means for Your Feet)

You truly have to be a bit of a badass to wear Dr. Martens because breaking them in is no easy feat.  The process takes patience, grit, and a high tolerance for stiff leather and sore heels. In many ways, breaking in Dr. Martens is like breaking in Birkenstocks—both require time, consistency, and a little bit of pain before comfort sets in.  Yet they’re also completely different worlds: one grounded in soft cork and natural leather, the other built on thick soles and tough, structured leather. It’s a bit like stepping into The Upside Down from “Stranger Things”—familiar, but with its own set of rules.

This difference is exactly why I compared Docs head-to-head with Solovair, Blundstone, and Birkenstock boots in one real-world wear test, ranking break-in difficulty, structure, and long-term comfort here: Solovair vs Blundstone vs Dr. Martens vs Birkenstock Boots: The Ultimate Comfort, Support & Real-Life Comparison Guide.

Breaking in Dr. Martens feels a lot like stepping into the Upside Down from Stranger Things—familiar yet completely different. The process mirrors breaking in Birkenstocks but with its own world of stiffness, patience, and transformation.

Why Dr. Martens Are Harder to Break In Than Birkenstocks (And What to Do About It)

Let’s get one thing straight: breaking in a pair of Dr. Martens is far more challenging than breaking in Birkenstocks.  If you’ve ever complained about the discomfort of new Birkenstocks, just wait until you take on a pair of fresh Docs—the tough leather, rigid soles, and stiff seams make the process a true endurance test.

I still remember breaking in my very first pair of Dr. Martens over 30 years ago—it was unforgettable for all the wrong reasons.  Blisters on my heels, sore arches, and aching feet were part of the journey.  But with years of experience perfecting the art of breaking in Birkenstocks, I’ve learned a few tricks to make even the toughest Doc Martens soften up faster and with far less pain.

If you haven’t already read my guides, start there before lacing up your combat boots.  Those posts form the foundation of my tried-and-true method—what I now call "Gina Mama’s protocol for breaking in Dr. Martens"—a technique that blends patience, leather care, and a little Birkenstock wisdom for the ultimate no-blister break-in.  Start slow—wear them for short periods each day and let the leather naturally mold to your feet.   Don’t try to shortcut the process—never soak or heat your boots to “speed things up.” Doing so can damage the leather, warp the soles, and completely ruin your Dr. Martens before they’ve even had a chance to mold properly to your feet.

Step-by-Step Guide to Breaking In Dr. Martens Without Pain

  1. Buy authentic Dr. Martens — always purchase from a legitimate retailer. There are just as many fake Docs online as there are counterfeit Birkenstocks.
  2. Confirm your size — make sure your Dr. Martens fit correctly before you begin breaking them in.
  3. Test flexibility — take them out of the box and gently bend the soles. Authentic Docs should feel firm like a Birkenstock footbed. If they’re overly flexible from heel to toe, they might not be genuine.
  4. Wear the right socks — put on the same type of socks you plan to wear regularly, then lace up your boots snugly (not tightly). They should feel secure but not pinch your ankles.
  5. Walk indoors first — spend a few minutes walking around your house to get a feel for stiffness and toe room.
  6. Check for constriction — your feet shouldn’t feel squeezed. If they do, you may need a different size or width.
  7. Identify pressure points — wear them 5–10 minutes and note any discomfort, especially at the heel or instep seam.
  8. Stop at the first sign of pain — if your feet start hurting, remove the boots immediately.
  9. Protect sensitive areas — apply moleskin or blister patches where friction occurs. Moleskin sticks better than bandages and stays put during movement.
  10. Condition the leather — use Dr. Martens Wonder Balsam or another leather conditioner on the inside and outside. It softens stiff leather and shortens the break-in period.
  11. Let it absorb — allow the conditioner to soak in for 15–20 minutes, then wipe off any excess from the exterior. Leave the rest inside to soften the interior leather naturally.
  12. Double up on socks — layer thick wool socks (like L.L.Bean winter socks) over your regular pair. This stretches the leather and helps prevent blisters.
  13. Increase wear time gradually — wear your Docs around the house for 30–60 minutes daily.
  14. Re-condition overnight — apply another layer of Wonder Balsam inside and out, let it soak overnight, and wipe off the excess in the morning.
  15. Recover in Birkenstocks — give your feet a break by slipping into your most comfortable Birkenstocks during rest periods.
  16. Repeat daily — if your moleskin comes off, re-apply and wear your Docs slightly longer each day.
  17. Listen to your feet — remove them when discomfort sets in, re-apply conditioner, and let the boots rest overnight.
  18. Stay consistent — follow this process for two to three weeks. When the leather softens and the soles flex comfortably, your Dr. Martens are officially broken in.
Dr. Martens Wonder Balsam — Leather Conditioner

Dr. Martens Wonder Balsam is a signature blend of natural and synthetic waxes designed to nourish, protect, and soften leather boots. It’s an essential step in Gina Mama’s break-in protocol—used inside and out to ease stiffness, prevent cracks, and help your Docs feel comfortable faster.

My Daily Break-In Routine for Dr. Martens Boots (What Actually WorkeD

It took me about two full weeks to get my Dr. Martens comfortable enough to wear without moleskin and with just one pair of socks.  Each night during that period, I made boot break-in part of my evening routine.  I’d lace up my Docs while preparing dinner and getting the kids ready for bed—just enough wear time to gently flex the leather without pain.  After everyone was asleep, I’d unwind with an episode of Stranger Things, slip off my Docs, trade them for my coziest Birkenstock Bostons, and massage a layer of Dr. Martens Wonder Balsam into the leather.  Leaving the conditioner to soak overnight worked wonders, softening the boots bit by bit until they molded perfectly to my feet.

After two weeks of careful conditioning and daily wear, these Dr. Martens have softened beautifully. Notice the natural creases, flexible leather, and lived-in shine — proof that patience and Wonder Balsam pay off.

Breaking In Dr. Martens Without Pain: Why Patience Is the Secret to Long-Term Comfort

Just like Birkenstocks, Dr. Martens boots require patience and persistence to break in properly.  The key is allowing your feet, ankles, and body to gradually adjust while the tough leather softens and molds to your natural shape.  Applying Dr. Martens Wonder Balsam helps ease the process by conditioning the leather, but real comfort comes from consistent wear — your body weight and repeated flexing help the AirWair sole adapt perfectly to your stride.

Over time, your Docs will transform from stiff combat boots into supportive everyday favorites that feel custom-made for your feet.  Much like a well-worn pair of Birkenstocks, they only get better with age.

And yes — it might surprise you, but Gina Mama is happily stepping out in something other than Birkenstocks these days.  Then again… stranger things have happened.

2025 Update: Dr. Martens After 8 Years — Comfort, Wear, and Long-Term Durability

These Dr. Martens are still holding up beautifully after nearly eight years of wear.  The leather has softened perfectly over time, developing a rich patina that tells their story with every step.  They’re more comfortable than ever, thanks to the naturally springy AirWair soles that keep each stride cushioned and supported.

Eventually, the interior began to show signs of wear, and my heels and arches started to complain — a reminder of just how much I’d worn them.  After adding a pair of Cushion Shoe Insoles, they felt good as new on the inside, proving that a little care and maintenance can make a great pair of Docs last a lifetime.

FAQ
Breaking In Dr. Martens (Doc Martens / Docs)
the Birkenstock Way

How long does it take to break in Dr. Martens?

Most people need about 2–3 weeks to fully break in Dr. Martens, though softer leathers (like Pascal or Virginia) take less time.  Wearing your boots daily for short periods, conditioning the leather with Wonder Balsam, and resting your feet in Birkenstocks between wears helps speed up the process.

What’s the fastest way to soften Dr. Martens leather?

The fastest safe method is to use Dr. Martens Wonder Balsam inside and out, wear thick socks to gently stretch the leather, and flex the soles daily.  Avoid using heat or water, which can crack or warp the leather.

Can I use Birkenstock techniques to break in Dr. Martens?

Yes!  The “Birkenstock way” focuses on patience and gradual adaptation. Alternate wear time, use supportive footwear (like Birkenstocks) for recovery, and let the leather mold naturally without forcing it.

And if your Birkenstock boots feel tight, stiff, or painful during break-in, you’ll find a complete step-by-step solution in my guide How to Break In Birkenstock Boots: Real Tips for Comfort, Fit & Long-Lasting Wear.

How can I stop Dr. Martens from giving me blisters?

Use moleskin or blister patches on friction spots from day one.  Don’t over-tighten the laces, and limit initial wear to short indoor sessions.  Conditioning the leather regularly will help prevent rubbing and stiffness.

Do Dr. Martens get more comfortable over time?

Definitely.  Once broken in, Dr. Martens contour to your foot shape just like Birkenstocks.  The AirWair soles stay springy, and the leather develops a beautiful patina that makes them even more comfortable and stylish over the years.

What if I don’t like Dr. Martens or they don’t work for my feet?
If Dr. Martens still don’t feel right after breaking them in — whether it’s the weight, stiffness, or overall fit — you’re not alone.  Different boots work better for different feet, especially if you have wide feet, high insteps, or sensitivity to stiff leather.

    About the Author:

Retro cartoon-style illustration of Gina Mama, creator of I Love Birkenstocks, walking her Springer Spaniel while wearing red Birkenstock Arizona sandals, cuffed jeans, a black t-shirt, and sunglasses in front of a café. The image highlights her laid-back California style, love for Birkenstock comfort, and the ilovebirkenstocks.com brand logo.
Hi, I’m Gina Mama—the unapologetic Birkenstock addict behind I Love Birkenstocks. 👣 My teenage crush in the 90s wasn’t on a boy band—it was on a pair of Birks. I wore them for a decade straight (sorry, other shoes). After rekindling the flame in 2015, I’ve been diving deep into everything Birkenstock: the history, the styles, the care tips, and yes…the occasional rant about narrow soles. For me, Birks aren’t just sandals—they’re a lifestyle. Comfort, authenticity, self-expression… and maybe a little cork dust in my veins.
